Sorry friends. I know it’s been a slow few days, but life-life has required too much of my attention to properly keep things in order here. There will be a return to normal next week.

Monday Catch-up: Tanduay Rhum, the Future of Tiki, the World’s Most Expensive Cocktail…
How is it Monday already? I had three days off and almost nothing to drink and time still seemed to fly right by…
Moving on.
4,532 Litres of rum are for sale. The port of Cartagena is auctioning off 22 barrels and 132 bottles of Quorhum rum on July 21st at a starting bid of 21,000 euros. Via The Leader
Tanduay Rhum is the second most popular rum in the world. Here in the U.S., though, you can hardly get it. But their growth is strong and there are rumors of it hitting our shores. Via Rum Connection
Yet another article about the Daiquiri. It’s short, but sweet. Via National Post
The World’s Most Expensive Cocktail is a Mai Tai. For $1300 you can get a Mai Tai using the near-impossible to find, original 17-year-old J Wray & Nephew Jamaican Rum… or you could if they were willing to sell you the last shot. Which they aren’t. Via Herald Sun
There’s a seminar being held for the Tiki lovers. Learn about the death of Tiki and it’s resurgence and enjoy some Tiki drinks while you’re at it. Via A Mountain Of Crushed Ice
Get your mixing started for another cocktail contest. About.com’s cocktail contest for July is all about the Light Rum, hopefully it will produce some interesting results. Via About.com
The image in this post has nothing to do with anything. It’s just a cool old saloon photo.
Monday Catch-up: Captain Jack Sparrow Sightings, Oil Spills, and Fourth of July boredom
I didn’t really do a Monday Catch-up last week. I was on-call for work all week and generally on-call makes me cranky, crabby, and solely interested in getting as much sleep in between calls. So apologies for the slowness of last week and apologies in advance for future weeks where I’m on-call.
In other news, yesterday was the Fourth of July. And it was boring. Now, I was already planning for boring because I was on-call and that means I really can’t make plans to go out and do anything. But I had hoped that I could stand outside and see some fireworks. Unfortunately we had typical Seattle cloud cover last night so no actual fireworks were seen. Just bursts of colorful haze in the night sky and the “boom boom BOOM crackle” of celebrations going on anyway.
Today I’m off work though, so I’m home drinking copious quantities of rum from a pineapple. Hu-fuckin-zzah!
My foul mood didn’t provide me with much interest in anything, but here are a few things that I didn’t mention last week.
Captain Jack Sparrow has been sighted. Johnny Depp has been caught by paparazzi all decked out in his pirate attire for Pirates 4. Via PopSugar
BP is ruining our shipwrecks. In addition to fucking up the wildlife and the coastal wetlands, the BP Oil Spill is also threatening the historic shipwrecks that rest in the depths of the Gulf of Mexico. Via Huliq
Morocco was pirate central. I’ve always wanted to go to Morocco and this article on Morocco’s pirate history only fuels that fire. Via Financial Times
Image info: WhyIsTheRumGone.com’s tiki consultant sent me a picture of what he says is the Black Pearl. He’s on vacation in Hawaii and says it’s visible from his hotel room and that he was going to be taking better pictures. The one in this post is from his cell phone and is a bit… Loch Ness Monster-y
Monday Catch-up: Ah fuck it…
It’s 11:44pm. Almost Tuesday. There’s not much I was interested in over the weekend anyway. Maybe tomorrow.
For now, here’s a buccaneer via Library of Congress
About the Friday before last…
It was totally my intention to have some rum reviews going last week. The week before I was all geared up to make the trip to Los Angeles, buy some rum, and do some drinking and reviewing with the crew. Step one went as planned and I made it safely to Los Angeles. Step two went as planned and we bought three bottles of rum and brought out a fourth that my friends had been saving to share with me. Step three was going as planned, but somewhere along the line “drinking and reviewing” turned into “drinking and drinking”. Continuing after the jump…
Monday Catch-up: Rum runners, Stranger Tides plots, the fight for Captain Morgan…
Monday again. Yayyyyy. Let’s see what interested me…
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are battling for Captain Morgan. The Virgin Islands “promised nearly $3 billion in tax subsidies to the owner of Captain Morgan if it moves the rum-making operation to St. Croix” and on top of that, apparently this is also a race issue. Via The Washington Post
The Northern California Pirate Festival was over the weekend. They estimated 40,000 attendees, a good number of whom attempted to set the world record for the largest gathering of pirates. Via SFGate
Disney put out a press release for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. No more guessing about plots and whatnot. And the best news, Gibbs is back! WOOHOO! Via Live For Films
There’s a Pirates of the Burning Sea expansion coming out in August. For those of you who know this game ever existed, I was also totally thinking “Wow, that shit’s still alive?”. For those who never heard of it, it’s a Pirate themed MMORPG that went live when it should have stayed waaaaay beta. Maybe I’ll have to give it another shot. Via MMO Reviews
Under The Black Flag put out two articles on historical locations that played major roles in the Golden Age of Piracy. One article is about Nassau and the other is about the Bahamas. Both are interesting reads. Via Under The Black Flag here and here
The former USS Dexter was scuttled in Lake Michigan on Friday. The USS Dexter was that ship that sank the Canadian rum-runner I’m Alone back in 1929. Via The Vancouver Sun
