Sorry friends. I know it’s been a slow few days, but life-life has required too much of my attention to properly keep things in order here. There will be a return to normal next week.

Rum Review: DonQ Cristal
This is a review that should have gone up last week and it’s another white rum – DonQ Cristal. DonQ is the product of the Serralles family who have been distilling what they tout as “the finest, best-tasting rum in the world” for six generations. Now, that’s an impressive claim to make about their product and one could chalk it up to the inherent pride of Puerto Ricans, but six generations is nothing to scoff at though so maybe it’s more than bravado.

Rum Review: Angostura 1919
For people who don’t drink rum Angostura usually means only one thing – bitters.
Oh the things people miss when they don’t drink rum.
Angostura’s foray into the world of rum happened at the turn of the last century, so while you may not have seen their rum in your local liquor store, they’ve been in the game for a while.
Continued after the jump…
Rum Review: The Lash
Back on the 26th I mentioned that there was a new spiced rum called The Lash being reviewed and that I wanted to try it. Well, shortly thereafter I was the grateful recipient of a bottle. I’ve been slowly working my way through it and sitting on this review for a while, though I’ve put out some of my opinions of it elsewhere… and since I’ll be in Los Angeles tomorrow (so maybe no update) I figured today should be the day to review it here.
New rating sytem.
I’ve been in the habit of awarding random rum ratings that amused me, but maybe didn’t properly convey how I actually felt about a rum, so I’m going to stop that.
In place of that I’ve chosen to use this 50 point scale which will then translate into a rating out of 5:
- Package – 10 pts – The bottle, the label, the product name. The outward appearance of everything but the rum itself.
- Appearance – 10 pts – The rum itself. The color, the legs, the dead flies floating in it…
- Nose – 10 pts – The aroma, in the bottle, in the glass, in the toilet, whever…
- Taste – 10 pts – If I have to explain this there’s something wrong.
- Alcohol – 10 pts – This is awarded by default as long as there’s booze in it and I don’t get hungover, immediately throwup, or burn my vocal chords because of it. Things along those lines. Rounding out the 50 points. If you don’t see it mentioned in a review, assume nothing went wrong.
Now you know.
Rum Review: Gosling’s Black Seal
Oh Gosling’s Black Seal, how do I love thee?
A welcome excursion from the Meyers’seses or Black Straps, Gosling’s Black Seal is a dark rum treat to the senses that is reasonably priced, pretty widely available, and, most importantly, consistently delicious. And, while the label may seem a bit lighthearted with it’s black seal balancing a rum keg, the bottle can be an asskicker if you mistreat it. There have been evenings where hours of tender love and affection suddenly changed into the Seal turning on me, leaving me sobbing on cold tiles, wondering where I’d gone wrong.
But don’t let that fool you into thinking I don’t like this rum… (more…)
